Bungie and Activision agreement. What it means to the customer?

Big news broke up yesterday regarding 10 years publishing deal between Bungie and Activision. Although Bungie broke off with Microsoft on 2007, Bungie was in contract to deliver couple Halo games. Now that they made Halo Reach, which could be the final Halo series developed by Bungie, they finally can focus on the new IP.

A lot of gaming community "cried" because the deal with Activision. Activision had a bad reputation lately because of Infinity Ward's soap opera, that many gamers condemn Activision for treating IW such a way. While it is impossible know what happen exactly between Activision and IW, it couldn't stop bad publicity for Activision.

Putting aside Activision and IW saga, should Bungie goes to EA, the balance of power is not right. EA already has Battlefield: Bad company, Medal of honor series plus whatever Respawn Entertainment will be making, which most likely will be another FPS, EA will be too strong in FPS genre and it is not good for customers.

With Bungie joining Activision, at least competition is healthy and we will enjoy some good games from all developers.Considering Activision's financial powerhouse, it will help speed up Bungie's growth even more.

And since Bungie remains independent and will retain its IP rights, Bungie should have freedom of creativity in its games and not subject to Activision's terror.

True that Activision probably is the most hated game company on earth right now, but from customer's point of view, the deal between Bungie and Activision is not such a bad move after all.

  1. BUNGiVISION? LOL!

But seriously, that's not right in any way. I think many people put publishers in a high place for no reason, it's the devs that make the game, so even if they were on a deal with EA, nothing would have changed, at least not to customers.

I can't say I'm not happy with this though, whatever Activision is, it's better than Microsoft.

I don't think Activision is evil, there's a constant struggle between publishers and developers, that doesn't make publishers evil.

EA was once called evil, they closed doors to "Origin Systems", the most evil deed possible, but they also supported Will Wright in making SimCity which later spawned the Sims. They also supported Battlefield from the very beginning, among many other stuff.

Activision has been publishing since the Atari 2600 times, and they've supported some of my favorite companies including Raven Software and of course Infinity Ward.

  2. Bungie can sign with EA or Activision as long as the publisher have the resources necessary for Bungie to developed AAA games. What I don't like with Activision is they are milking their beloved franchise too much Guitar Hero, Call of Duty etc, which in turn sacrificing creativity.

I think MW2 is over hype, it didn't give us gamers any improvement. It is just the same as the first one only more guns, perks, worse story.

But since Bungie remains independent, it means that they can take the their time in developing new IP without being rushed by publisher which is totally ok by me.

  3. All publishers milk their franchises, Activision is going a little bit too far, but eventually they'll stop milking so much.

    I don't like MW2 either.

The best thing that can happen (to me) is Bungie making games for the PC. Microsoft still refuses to port Halo 3 to PC, even though the prequels were both released on PC. Now if I get lucky, I won't be forced to wait forever for an FPS release on PC.

  4. As Bungie will be makin a multi platform for their new IP, I think its a big chance it will include PC as well. Let's hope so!!
