Modern Warfare 2 : Multiplayer Match Making System

Robert Bowling (IW Community Manager) has confirmed that there won't be a region selection option for multiplayer matchmaking system in MW2.

But don't you worry, for international players like us (Indonesian Gamers) Infinity Wards has set up a new Matchmaking System that will reduce lag. Even though they still doing it with Auto Assist matchmaking system, the function are quite different from previous COD 4.

In Call Of Duty 4, The matchmaking system is looking for the first available game. It doesn't care if you in Asia and the game host is in US. All it matters is to get you into the game quickly, so you will have unstable latency from time to time.

Now in MW2, the matchmaking system will first look for the best connection. It will scan if there is a four signal game available for you. If there are no four signal game for you to join, it will scan and look for 3 signal game available and so on.

This is really good news for us and personally I think it will be better. This system will make us easier to find good signal and hence better competition.

But what if the system doesn't work? Robert Bowling say they will monitor all the international users in the IW forum. And if the current matchmaking system does not satisfy, IW will consider to give players a select region option via patches.

PSN content sharing explained

Do you know that you can actually share your content with others? If you don't, read on.
First thing, I do not whatsoever encourage content sharing, because somebody will find it wrong, or your account may get hacked, etc.
Back to the topic. Sony allows users to activate 5 PS3s to share downloaded content. One of the reason is to enable user to still play their content on the replacement machine while his PS3 is under repair.
However, allowing this feature enable people to share the content with each other when they purchased a content. Simply log in into your existing account on the PS3 that you wish to activate and download the content that has been purchased. The list link is on the top right side when you enter PS store marked "View Download".
Note that it only activates 5 PS3s. The system is unique to console ID not the profile.

An example:
Person A bought a game on PSN store using his account, then let B,C,D,E login using A's account and download the game and split the cost.
Tomorrow person A bought another game, but since B doesn't like the game, he refused to participate. Person A finds a replacement which is F, and agree to split it among C,D,E,F.
Can F play the game? Answer is no, because for account A, 5 PS3s has been activated (A,B,C,D,E). So you can't activate another PS3 unless you deactivate one of those five.
And once you deactivate, all the content that has previously downloaded using A's account will no longer work.
You can deactivate in user management on the XMB.

Tokyo Game Show losing its momentum, industry in danger

In the past, there are only two game shows that are matters, E3 and Tokyo Game Show (TGS). The rest are pebbles on the side road. Publishers and developers are preparing lots and lots of new announcements, contents just for those two shows. And TGS is usually better than E3.
Indeed TGS '09 just finished last Sunday, and truthfully there nothing much newsworthy. Most of it just updates of announced games.Attendance is lower from last year, even Capcom's Inafune is unimpressed with the show. He said,
Personally when I looked around [at] all the different games at the TGS floor, I said "Man, Japan is over. We're done. Our game industry is finished."

This raised a new question. Is Japan game market really shrinking? Yasuhide Kobayashi at DICE Summit Asia tells that if they depend on Japan market, they will go bankrupt. Need to make games that appeal globally.
While it may be true, but a lot of Japanese developer's income source still comes from domestic market. 92% of Koei income came from Japan. Square received 87% of its income from its domestic market.
Developers are indeed trying to inject some life into Japanese game industry, but for now, looks like the industry is in danger. And if all of them decided to make more western appeal games, Japan is at risk in losing their identity. And we certainly do not need to play some WWII FPS all the time.

PS: One thing that is bothering me is why didn't Capcom decide to announce Super Street Fighter IV at TGS? After all TGS just finished two days ago. Is it they haven't prepare the material or maybe they just didn't care? Hope it is the former one.

Super Street Fighter IV confirmed!!

Capcom confirmed Super Street Fighter IV will release around spring and it will be a stand alone disc.
The sequel will feature additional eight new characters. Three has been announced by Capcom:
- T-Hawk, an Indian fighter which you already known him from Super Street Fighter 2.
- Dee Jay, Jamaican kick boxer from Super Street Fighter 2.
- Juri will be the first korean tae kwan do style fighter in the series.
Other feature worth mentioning:
- Super Street Fighter IV won't be compatible online with Street Fighter IV.
- New Ultra combo for original Street Fighter IV cast.
- Enhanced online play, balancing tweaks, and more
- A bit disappointment to hear that it won't be a DLC cause the change is so extensive. But Capcom promised that the game won't be a full-priced game, and the publisher plans to offer a special bonus to gamers who already own Street Fighter IV.

News Updates for Modern Warfare2

Recently Infinity Ward Community Manager, Robert Bowling held 2 hours section in Tweeter by answering all question thrown at him by fans,

I am going to conclude all the facts I was able to gather in that 2 hours with Bowling

Facts
1) The Special OPs could be as long or even longer than the Single Player (if you go for all the stars)

2) There are 69 Stars in CO OP to be collected. Each Mission will give you 3 stars plus 1 star if you beating it on regular, 2 stars in hardened, 3 stars in Veterans

3) The reason the rise the level cap from 55 to 70 because this time around there are more weapons, perks, call signs, etc to unlock. Therefore they need to rise the level cap.

4) There are some goodies to be unlock if you go prestige. It has not been revealed yet.

5) There are 23 missions in CO OP with these following game types:
Assault - Send you to run the levels killing bad guys while avoiding Civilian
Stealth - Where you and your buddy need to sneak past the enemy
Wave Defense - Where you going to defend against wave and wave of enemies. (just like the Horde mode in Gears of war 2)
Elimination - Send you down to kill all enemy on that level. Enemy can spawn with a limited number of times
Snowmobile racing - very straight forward. just Finish first and you WIN!
Snowmobile Combat - Race against and shoot your friend.
AC 130 - One of you become a gunner in AC-130, while the other become a soldier on the ground calling death from above.

6)
There is no region selection in MW2 Multiplayer. But they have installed a new system in Match Making system that will help reduce the lags. But if the international still having problem with LAG, They will consider to patch MW2 so we can choose which region when we play. In the mean time they would like to see if their new Match Making auto assist working or not.

7)It is possible to shoot down enemy helicopter while you are in AC-130. Since AC 130 will be Flying much higher then a chopper ever could, enemy helicopter will an easy target for you to shoot down... YEAH!

There are more question answer by bowling but, I don't think it worth mentioning here.
I will up date again if there are some new and interesting stuff to show in this blog in the future.

PSN Region Indonesia available on October 2nd!!

For those who live in Indonesia, we know that we never get support from principal when it comes to gaming. With Sony Indonesia's own PS3 and PSPgo launching is fast approaching, things finally change. The launching event will be held at Mal Kelapa Gading 3 on 1st October. And according to unconfirmed yet reliable info, part of the program is the introduction of PSN Region Indonesia available starting October 2nd!

I was a bit of skeptical when I heard Sony is going to launch PSPgo.With no UMD, PSPgo can only play downloadable games. And since Indonesia never had a PSN backbone, I left wondering how people will get access to buy games. To add matter worse, Indonesian credit card cannot be used in other PSN region.
I'm sure glad Sony has at least prepare a solution, that is Indonesia very own PSN region. Indonesian can use their credit card to buy digital content of the Playstation store (games, addons, theme, wallpaper) not just for PSPgo, but for PS3 slim as well. For someone that doesn't have a credit card or hesitate to use it, Sony center will sell a prepaid card that serve as a top up to your playstation account and you can then use it to buy stuffs at PSN store.

Please take a note that Indonesian region is included in Region 3. For more details please read some explanation regarding regions and alternative solution in buying DLC (Downloadable content).

Tips n tricks: Alternative way to buy PSN DLC

Some of you may have no problems in buying a content from Playstation store. But some who living in countries that are not supported by Sony, have to find a alternative way. Myself for example, who live in Jakarta, my credit card cannot be used to register to Playstation store, maybe because we have a high rate of credit card fraud.

Firstly, some facts. Playstation store and games are divided by regions.
There are four regions:
1. Region 1 - US
2. Region 2 - UK
3. Region 3 - Asia
4. Region 4 - Australia & NZ

Since PS3 is region free, you can play any games from different region. However, you have to take a note that content is linked to your games region. Example: if you buy a content from Playstation store US (region 1), your content will not work if your game is different region (not region 1). So be careful, always plan which region you going to buy and match it with your playstation store which you are planning for future purchase.

Ways to buy DLC:

1. Credit card. It is the straight forward way. If you are living in countries that have Sony's PS3 support, eg: US, Singapore, you can use your credit card. Or you can ask your relatives who is living in that particular country help by using their credit cards. But it is a sensitive issue.

2. PSN cards. It is like a vouchers to shop in PS store. PSN cards have their own region, so you must check which cards is right for your region. PSN cards have different denomination ($10, $20).  Some retailers imported PSN cards but carry a lot of premium.

3. Entropay. Entropay is a services that lets you make a virtual credit cards to be used in country like US, UK. So basically it is a bridge for you to buy online content without having an american/ european credit card. You link it to your local credit card and transfer certain amount to Entropay virtual credit card and register it to your Playstation store account. However, you have to pay 5% fee for every amount that you transfer to Entropay.

Currently I use entropay to buy DLC's from US playstation store. It is the cheapest way beside credit card, easy to use and US PS store is the most updated and complete of all other PS store.

Hope you find it useful.

Natal and Wand: impression so far (part 2: Natal)

Microsoft used Katamari to show off Natal. In Katamari, player uses nothing except hand gestures to control the Katamari ball. The control seems responsive although there are some lag in controlling the ball.
Seven heavy weight developers are pleased with Natal potential. Natal not only requires no controller, but also detects face, so emotion element can be included in future games. They discuss that potential Natal is not limited to games, but the way experience can change. (Computer interface ala Minority report, Shopping online, or even doing business).

Verdict: Natal seems much more promising than Sony's wand. Natal is great in enhancing gameplay, but it is doubtful if people really want to play Halo by jumping all around and mimicking imaginary gun in their hands.
According to previous interview with Nintendo's Miyamoto, during the development of Wii, Nintendo already aware of this technology and looked into it, but decided to scrap it saying that it didn't meet their technical requirement. Maybe Nintendo knows something that Microsoft doesn't? Who knows. Natal still has a year before launch, so Microsoft has plenty of time to polish Natal.

Natal and Wand: Impression so far (part 1: Wand)

Tokyo Game Show just finished. Seen the demo, watched the developer's testimonial. So, what's the impression?
During TGS, Microsoft and Sony both showcase their motion controllers respectively. While Natal showed demo with Katamari, Space Invaders, Sony used Resident Evil 5 and LittleBigPlanet.
Sony's wand was used in Resident Evil 5 as a pointer to shoot the zombies. Because the demo is in Japanese, its impossible to know what the commentator is talking, but the interesting part is that the guy that actually play the demo, hold BOTH a wand and a joystick. It may look like he has to move the character using joystick while using wand to shoot. It seems to be more complicated playing RE5 with wand than without.
In LittleBigPlanet, Sony show two player coop. Player one, using a joystick, controls the Sackboy, while player two, using a wand, manipulates objects in order to help player one completes the stage. While this is certainly entertaining seeing coop gameplay with wand, but it is something that Nintendo Wii has done it before.

Verdict: Not sold to wand at the moment. However this is just a prototype, it may be different when the actual game is released. And I'm sure hopeful it will improve.

Digital distribution threatens retail game store

Recently Nedgame, Dutch biggest specialist game retailer refuse to sell PSPgo. And there is a rumor that EB Australia refusing also. The main concern is the high price it carries and the inability to sell UMD games that has been their main source of income.
Since Apple launch its itune stores, digital distribution is getting more and more popular. Smaller developers may find it safer in terms of risk in promoting their game. Xbox Live and PSN has been successful in selling games via download.

Digital distribution can significantly impact retail industry, because middle man can totally be removed. The industry is threaten with the rise of digital distribution. While this is not exactly a fresh topic, console games until recently always need a media.
The introduction of PSPgo, iphone, and the more sophisticated OnLive and Gaikai, we can see the trend that physical media can someday be eliminated.

So is it today? Probably not. According to Sony, the games that are selling well is still smaller and cheaper games by small developers. For full game, people seems prefer a physical media that they can get hold of and has a resale value.
Another reason is because for company like Sony, retailers still distribute their PS3 consoles and games. Sony did try to maintain purchasing parity between their digital download and physical games. Actually purchasing certain games in UMD format is slightly cheaper than getting in on PSN, in hope to prevent further anger from retailers.

Nevertheless game distributing business will face shrinking and need to differentiate.

PSPgo set to launch Oct 1st

From A Gamerz Blog

Sony will launch PSPgo on October 1st. According to its tally, PSPgo will hit stores with 16.000 pieces of digital content. But most of it are TV and Movie shows, while new and old games are accounted only 225 pieces.
For those who are unable to use credit card to buy games at PSN, Sony is also releasing voucher cards in store to be used in buying certain PSPgo games.
With its already high price and scrapped UMD transfer program, it's interesting to see how the sales will be at launch day.

Gaikai game streaming demo: Play World of Warcraft in your browser

Above is a demo by Gaikai. It lets you play games in your browser by streaming. The demo includes less demanding games like Mario Kart 64, Spore, Need for Speed Pro Street, to more sophisticated games like Eve Online and even World of Warcraft!
Note that this all running in your Firefox browser without game installation, no plug ins, patch downloading, it is all taken care from Gaikai's server. Its just click and play.
During this demo game is running from remote server located 800 miles roundtrip from the PC.
I don't quite sure how much broadband you need, but from the commentary you need less than 1 Mbps of internet connection. Is it going to be lag free? We wouldn't know for sure until Gaikai is actually launching.
I have my doubt that streaming will not be as lag free as having installed WoW program in your computer. But for less lag demanding game like Mario and Spore, sure why not?
If this is not the future of digital game distribution, I don't know what is.

Does Wii still has room for hardcore gamers?

I used to be a fan of Nintendo, since Gamecube era. I admire them trying to be different and reaching out other market segment that is not a hardcore gamers. Since the introduction of DS and Wii, I really impressed on how they capturing casual market and dominating sales chart week after week.

So I bought a Wii, I found that the game is pretty casual. Even for Super Mario Galaxy, it couldn't satisfied my hunger. Don't get me wrong, I think Super Mario Galaxy is an awesome game, but I guess I need more than stomping the enemies. I want more complexity, stories, deeper character which until now I haven't seen any of those in Wii.
Then the introduction of Wii Fit. I was drawn to it and decided to buy it, just to find out what is it really about. I played it for two weeks and then stop. I haven't play it for a long time, until I decided to take it to my girlfriend's house where she has 2 small nephews. I thought Wii would be more useful than my home where there are more casual gamers than myself.
Weeks past by, the Wii is getting less and less attention, and dusted in the corner. It did spur interest from them for a while, but then faded. Nowadays it is just Winning Eleven, Street Fighter that dominates the living room.

It is pretty much explained the low attachment rate on Wii. Casual gamers are casual gamers, they don't play for a long time, maybe pick up for a short while then leave it until something new came on.
A lot of casual iphone games are like that too. People just don't play for hours, they play for minutes. When something come along, they can suspend it and resume it later.. maybe.
Publishers has attempted to make hardcore games for Wii, for example: Gran Theft Auto: Chinatown wars, Madworld, The Conduit, only to find total failure.

Wii strategy to captures bigger casual segment market is undoubtedly clever. But for myself, I rather play online games with my buddies on my PS3 or Xbox 360.

Gaikai another OnLive?

Gaikai is a service that lets you play any games streamed through your browser. You will need no hardware investment. Your PC just need to meet minimum requirement, and has an internet connection.
Wait, isn't this the same with OnLive? Isn't it just a copycat of what OnLive been doing?

While the technology remains the same, using cloud computing, the difference between Gaikai and OnLive is the approach.
OnLive wants to eliminate the need of gaming consoles, deliver AAA title via streaming and eventually become the publishers themselves. Recent interview with Games Magazine, David Perry said that doing that is close to no chance, trying to compete with big boys, and everybody.

Gaikai philosophy is, rather taking the competition to big boys, they will cooperate with publishers. EA might use it to play their demo in their website, or Sony may use it to let customers play games from its archive on PSN.
It will also target casual gamers like facebook games, flash games, and My Space. Gaikai wants to provide this market with more sophisticated game that can be played in the browser via click and play method. And if Gaikai can capture a significant proportion of that market, it will be really huge.

Gaikai didn't promise that it can stream full HD games lag free, and less demanding games is the ones that Gaikai wanted to do first.
It sounds promising, and might actually work. Don't you think?

Dare to compare: PSPgo and PSP-3000

So with PSPgo is available now, which PSP should you buy? Here are the facts that I get to help you decide:

PSPgo

The good.
- It's smaller, lighter, and has cooler design.
- It has a system pause option. You can pause in the middle of your game, go to media bar to listen music and watch video. After that you can go back and resume your game.
- It has 16GB internal hard drive. Should you need more space, you can buy Memory Stick Micro (M2) and slot it into your PSPgo.
- You can transfer your old UMD games into your PSPgo. But Sony hasn't explained how and when.
- You can hook up your PSPgo to your PS3, and plug your PS3 controller to PSPgo and you will able to play PSP games on your PS3.

The bad.
- Its $249. Unless you are really loaded, the price is ridiculous. Why pay more for less feature?
- Say goodbye to your Memory stick PRO duo. It is not compatible.
- Comes in only two colours black and white.
- Since Sony hasn't confirmed how do you play your old UMD on your new PSPgo. There is a chance you might not be able to play it.

PSP-3000

The good.
- Its way cheaper. $169. A preferable device during this tough economy.
- Slightly bigger screen than PSPgo.
- You can use your Memory PRO duo to store your digital games.
- Comes in a lot of colours and bundles.

The bad.
- It's bigger and heavier.
- You won't be able to digitize your UMD games and you have to carry a stack of UMD everywhere you go.

A brief insight: Streaming games by OnLive

You probably heard about OnLive when announced in GDC 2009 back then. OnLive started by by WebTV founder Steve Perlman and former Eidos CEO Mike McGarvey. It is a new distribution game system that use streaming over the internet to deliver AAA from publishers like EA, Ubisoft, Eidos,Take two, etc.
The system designed to allow players to stream on demand games to their Mac or Windows based PC regardless what the specs is.
The system will also stream games directly to a TV via a small plug-in device, and players can use a custom wireless controller as well as VoIP headsets. There is no console or whatever, all a player got to do is to invest in that small plug-in device.

OnLive promised that the service will run online games without lag. Standard definition games will need 1.5 Mbps internet connection, while High definition will require 5 Mbps. OnLive will based on monthly subscription, but players might have to pay additional fee depending whether they want to play once or buy the game. Other exciting features is being able to watch others play in real time.

From the description, OnLive is really a breakthrough in how games are distributed. Another plus point is, OnLive will actually do all the hardware investment, because the technology is on the server side that distribute the games to players. Players don't need big investments like buying a console or upgrading the PC.

But a lot of skeptical comes with it. First, the internet connection is insane, 5 Mbps internet connection is rare, most countries don't even have internet connection that fast. Even if you have 5 Mbps connection, it is still depends on server location.
Second, OnLive will be competing againts Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft. Those giants with deep pockets of cash won't be sitting around and let OnLive to take the market share.
And if Onlive can truly deliver as its promise, games retailers are threatened to close down.

No doubt in the future OnLive might be the way in digitally distributed gaming, but for now it seems too far ahead of its time. OnLive is currently in beta phase. What's your take on this?

Difference in memory between PS3 and Xbox 360

I decided to put a new post regarding the difference memory between PS3 and Xbox 360 in terms of developing a game and why is it easier to develop on Xbox 360. Recent topics from Turbine's Craig Alexander that describe difference in memory architecture (256 ish MB vs 512ish MB), is not that PS3 has only 256 MB memory (hence the "ish").

Memory is used for a lot different purpose during gameplay especially for AI, task and graphics processing. Xbox 360 has 512 MB available memory to be used for that matters. But PS3 has two times 256 MB memory available, and each of this memory has a different purpose set by the hardware. In other words, PS3 has allocated certain memory to do certain things. Where in Xbox 360, its fully customizable.
Therefore, in PS3 you cannot simply decide "OK, I'm going to use 60% of memory capacity for AI.", while Xbox 360 developer has a lot of freedom to assign memory capacity.

So, is PS3 significantly lower performance than Xbox 360? Not necessarily. The offset to that is the PS3 cell processor. According to an article from N4G, cell processor can process a lot of maths. If your game has a lot fo physics object, you can do a lot more because it's very math intensive, not memory intensive. However, finding the "sweet spot" can sometimes tough.

Turbine: Console is the future platform for MMO

Turbine's Craig Alexander, at GDC Austin, talked that future MMORPG will be on console. Saying that, "we really finally have the hardware and the storage capacity to develop what we consider more traditional MMOs with lots of content,"
He also mention that developing on Xbox 360 is easier and cheaper than PS3. Some of the reasons are, PS3 memory is 256ish MB while Xbox 360 is 512ish MB, and Xbox 360 has more tools for development. But then, porting from Xbox 360 to PS3 will be harder than the other way around. So developer has to choose carefully which console to use for first development.
About Nintendo, Craig described Nintendo more resemble previous generation, and its just not there yet.

Twitter on Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Upcoming blockbuster PS3 game Uncharted 2: Among thieves will link to twitter. It will tweet when you complete a chapter, unlocking a throphy, making an online game, etc. It is not mandatory, you set turn it off in the setting.
Is it useful? Depends if your friends don't find it annoying to receive spam on your Nathan Drake's progress.
Is it nice? Well, yeah. It is the first game that collaborate with social network services, and I bet somebody will find it useful.
Is it smart? Hell yeah! Sony will get much of free advertisement of its game, and I expect other games will follow soon.
But hey, no hurt in getting additional cream to your cake right?

Why Sony in a hurry to push PSPgo?

PSPgo announcement came quite surprising and lukewarm. Firstly, with no UMD slot, it can only play downloadable games, therefore Sony has dual standard for PSP in the market (UMD and UMD-less). Though Sony said that they will provide user to convert their UMD games into digital file, until now we still don't know how they going to do it and when.
Secondly, lack of games for PSPgo in PSN shows Sony's lack of preparation.
But why is Sony such in a hurry?
The most possible answer is Apple. The iphone has been a successful in states, not only for phone but for gaming as well. Apple realize that gaming sector is a huge market, and with the robustness of apple store, iphone quickly become a major force in console wars.
What apple did was open up to all game developer. True, you most likely find cheap but crap games on apple store rather than a good one, but Apple did captured a huge chunk of casual gamer market portion by doing just that. And Apple start to invite big game developer to develop to its platform.
PSPgo is designed exactly to counter Apple's iphone and ipod gaming business. Recent announcement of PSP mini games that will be available in the future is another evidence that Sony is trying to compete in this market.
But will Sony be able to compete with already matured and robust Apple store? Sony is already behind in terms of online service. Compared to Xbox live, Sony has a lot of catching up to do with its PSN. The amazing high price Sony slaps on to PSPgo, and recent news of retailers boycott on PSPgo are definitely not helping.
Bottom line is, Sony needs to work hard to make PSPgo a success, and from current condition, its highly doubtful.

Microsoft subsidies Namco Bandai to develop Tales of Vesperia on PS3?

A Japanese developer recently blog that Microsoft did pay Namco Bandai a significant amount of money to obtain an exclusive for Tales of Vesperia.
Developing in Xbox 360 is easier than PS3, add another payout from Microsoft, Namco Bandai can significantly lower its development cost. But since Tales of Vesperia didn't sell well in Japan, even with lower development cost, Namco still can't break even, so they decided to port it to PS3. But Sony won't allow without getting a lot of extras for PS3 version.

With all development ready, it is cheap to port to PS3. In other words, you can say that Microsoft money was partly used to develop Tales of Vesperia on PS3.

So what's the deal here?
Let's step back for a moment. Microsoft needs Namco Bandai to develop Tales of Vesperia on Xbox 360 and time exclusive to breakthrough Japanese market.
Without money from Microsoft, Namco won't develop it because it's not feasible.

Then the game didn't sell on Xbox 360, Namco didn't recoup the cost. Namco not happy, decided to port to PS3, Namco needs Sony.
Sony, at the otherhand, has a leverage because they have a significant install base in Japan. They push Namco for extras, otherwise forget it.
So everybody has his own agenda, and in the end, it is just business.

Dutch retailers boycott on PSPgo

According to Eurogamer, Dutch biggest country retailer, Nedgame, refuses to sell PSPgo.
Their argument is that the PSPgo is too expensive and not attractive. Really? Is that all?

Of course not. The bigger concern is PSPgo games are digitally distributed via PSN. Nedgame said it will hurt significantly their profitability for not selling UMD, which is their main source of income.

Sorry Sony, its a very valid argument by Nedgame, should I say.

PS3 firmware 3.01 reportedly causing problems

Firmware 3.01 just released today. In case you are going to download it, you better hold your horses. According to Qj.net, many people reportedly have problem with their Blu ray drives after the update.
It doesn't recognize  the Blu ray as the media, thus can't play their game.
But a lot of response also confirm that there is no error and system just working fine after the update.
My suggestion is, wait for couple of days, see if Sony had a say into this thing, beside you can still play your game since it is not mandatory.

Game of the day: Scribblenauts

Name: Scribblenauts
Platform: NDS
Genre: Puzzle, action
Developer: 5th Cell
Release date: Sept 15th 2009

The reason that I decide to preview the Scribblenauts is because I believe it has a lot of potential. Scribblenauts quickly become a sleeper hit during E3 show this year, winning several "Best of show" award.

Scribblenauts is an action puzzle game with cartoon arts. It is a side scrolling and control totally by NDS stylus. The best part of Scribblenauts is when you attempt to solve a puzzle, you will type an item with your stylus (provided it is in dictionary), and once you typed it, the item pops out and you can use it to solve your current puzzle. Thus there are multiple ways in which you can solve the puzzle.

So what?
Hear this. The range of item that can be summoned include animal, fire, weapons, nature, even famous people! (fictional and real). Ask Albert Einstein to help you solve your problem maybe? According from report by Crunchgear (via 1 up), somebody got a copy early and hack into database system. Scribblenaut's dictionary totals gigantic 22.802 words. This include words like Electra dolphins, municipal buildings, and uh.. Rooster helmet??

Game Review : Colin McRae :Dirt 2

If you like driving simulation, you going to love this game. Alright, before we started, I am going to give you some detail about the game.

Title : Colin McRae : Dirt 2
Developer : Codemasters
Genre : Driving Simulation
Release Date : 8 September in North America

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Good : Solid Driving, great graphics, very forgiving, great damage model.
The Bad : To few Cars, to few tracks, not much of improvement from previous game "Grid"

Colin McRae : Dirt 2 is an off road driving sim racing game. The graphics in the game is exactly the same from the previous game from Codemaster "Grid". The Different is "Dirt 2" you will be driving in dirt, meanwhile "Grid" use to be in Tarmac. The two driving mechanics are quite different from each other, in Dirt 2 you have to think how to power slide in to corner, while in "Grid" we have to learn how stick you car to the tarmac as much as possible.

"Flash Back Mode"
How many time you guys out there who play a racing game, doing every corner perfectly only mess it up at the last corner and lost the race? Dirt 2 eliminate this frustration by giving you the "Flash Back Mode". So when you made a mistake in your race, you just simply use this mode to Flash back couple of seconds and start over. When you reach that corner for the second time, you can slow your car down and drive it more carefully through the corner. You can use these Flash Back Mode 4 times in a race in casual difficulty and it will take one off if you choose harder difficulty.

Cars
Unfortunately, Dirt2 don't have as many cars as "Grid" in term of selection. There are several categories of cars in Dirt2, eg Rally Cars, Buggies, Trucks, etc. And each category has couple selections of cars. In every race event, they have their own categories cars that allowed to enter. Other things, your car looks exactly the same when you got them as rookies, and have no visual changes at all when you reach Pro or world tour event. The difference can only be seen in the performance of the car.

Tracks
Even though all the tracks in Dirt2 are beautifully build, there are only a hand full of tracks can
be race on. All they did is just to make you race from A to B or B to A. even though it feel different, it still the same track.

Overall
Dirt2 is a solid Driving Sim game. it will keep you busy for quite some times. so if you are a Driving Sim Fans, Dirt2 is recommended by me.

Score
Dirt2 Score High 8 / 10

Tips n tricks: How to improve your fundamental Street Fighter IV skill?

Firstly, I am no means an expert in SF IV, just an ok player. What I put here is basically a combination of my experience and researches.
To improve your SFIV skill, especially if you are a new challenger, there are a lot of aspects of the game that you need to identify:

1. Basic special move.
This means hadouken, shoryuken as well as ultras. You need to be able to pull this perfectly wherever (1p or 2p side) and whenever you desire. There is the basic ground work of all fighting games.

2. Combo.
A lot of difference between a win or a lose is to be able to utilize every opportunity. Whenever there is a chance, you should be able to punish your opponent by combo them and take out as many damage as you can. Learn to combo step by step. 2 hits, 3 hits first, then if you comfortable enough, increase the combo, though getting 4 to 5 hits will be a lot harder. Ultimately you'll need to learn how to focus cancel ultra.

3. Cheap move.
Have you ever beaten by throws, cheap moves? Well though luck, this is the part of the game and you should be able to utilise cheap moves, because cheap moves is a very important tactics in the game. Learn how to time throws, or forcing opponent into blocking then immediately throw them. If cheap moves give you wins, then by all means, use it. At the other hand, you need to learn how to deal with cheap moves.

4. Zoning.
Zoning/ spacing is all about keeping your opponent from doing what they want. You can maintain your desire distance by poking, anti air, block strings as well as other things. Train your sense of distance, find out what is a safe distance, for example, to throw a fireball. A good SF IV player should have a strong zoning techniques at his disposal.

5. Timing.
Improve your reaction and timing. This means to execute a right move at a right time. Usually it just came naturally after you play that game for a while.

6. Find out other character's characteristic.
Get to know other character moves, combos, zoning techniques. It will increase your knowledge when facing those characters. Find out what is their weaknesses, openings for combo, as well as their advantage in the game.

7. Upgrade to arcade stick.
If you are a serious fighting gamers, you might want to upgrade to arcade stick. Sure, you can play fine on standard controller, but the way the buttons is set, and limitation on the buttons available give you huge handicap. Doesn't matter how well you set up your controller configuration, you always going to trade off. Another reason that I use arcade stick is to improve reaction time. I can execute faster shoryuken, ultras, focus cancel ultra, which timing is essential in game.

8. Get more experiences.
Do a lot of battles. Get more experiences. Most of the time, you will find somebody really good, and beat the crap of you. Instead of leaving the game, try to learn something from them. Try a few things, and see how did they responded. Think of it as a learning curve (it helps!).

9. Researches.
Nowadays, its easy to find a study material on the internet. Learn from the masters of different tournaments. Search out their videos, and take notes. Google Keyword hint: Daigo aka The Beast. Check out this dude! Possibly the greatest SF player on this planet.

Hopefully it helps. Good luck!

Wii sales down 5%, price cut rumoured

For the last 5 months, Wii sales has been declining for 50%. Based on latest August NPD data, the gap between Wii sales and PS3/ Xbox 360 is marginal.
No surprise there, because after price cuts, Wii price on only $50 cheaper than Xbox 360 and PS3.
So, is this the time for Wii to announce a price cut?
So far Nintendo hasn't announced anything yet, but it could come sooner than later.

Based on advanced retail listing forwarded to Kotaku, Wii is planning to cut price at the beginning of October.
Thought we didn't know by how much exactly, given that holiday season is approaching, it is definitely a right timing for a price cut.

Analysis: The total videogaming industry slide at 16% from previous month. Both PS3 and Xbox 360 enjoy sales increase due to price cut. PS3 move almost double from previous month, while Xbox 360 also increase slightly. However NPD cut off date is August 29, so total effect of price cut can only be seen on next month data.
On software side, Madden 10 takes the top chart with a million and a half units sold. Xbox 360 version of Batman manage to beat PS3's one by a slight margin. But it proves that exclusive content does work to help increase the sales, considering that historically Xbox 360 game version sales always beat PS3 by a landslide.

Adult film will be available soon on PS3?

Vivid entertainment, the largest adult film production company in the world, plans to seduce Sony to let them bring adult film to the Playstation network. Users then can rent or buy the selective movie from the Playstation store.
Since Sony already approved Japan's DDM.TV to bring on-demand blu-ray quality adult movies to PS3, Steve Hirsch (the head of Vivid entertainment) will make a formal request to Sony.
Sony has always been reluctant to allow adult entertainment in their console because kids do play PS3 everyday. However, Steve is confident that as long as age restriction and parental control module is in place, there shouldn't be any problem to restrict underage to access Adult Only section.
Vivid entertainment will also look into possibility bringing their product into Xbox 360 and Wii.

Apple coming in fast to challenge Nintendo and Sony

Apple decision to compete in gaming market is not a new thing. Since the launch of iphone, Apple began to notice that gaming market is a very potential market.
Technically, the difference in technology between iphone and those DS and PSP is minimal, the only difference is the controller, and the software. Because iphone was selling well, Apple didn't need much time to gain a significant installation base. As the result, games began popping at Apple store, which in fact mostly are junks repetitive genre (there are hundreds version of solitaire!).

Nevertheless it was successful business. Bigger game developer began to port their games to iphone and see how they performed. Even Konami made a "duck hunt" version of Metal gear solid 4 exclusively to iphone.

With the announcement of new iphone touch, it will offer gamers a very integrated piece of gaming device. At the presentation Apple boasting that they have  21.178 games available in Apple store compared to 607 games for PSP, and 3.680 games for DS, also cost a lot less than the competitior. $10 for most iphone games, $25- $40 for DS and PSP respectively. In addition to $199 tag price, Apple will seriously challenge Nintendo and Sony.

In the other hand, while having 21.178 games on their store, most of them are crap compared to Nintendo and PSP. In order to compete, Apple must invest in gaming development, more first party title and it will take some time to make up the experience that both Nintendo and Sony had.
Lastly, $199 is for 8 Gb only. Given current generation game size, 8 Gb won't fit many games.

New ipod touch, nano announced

Apple today announced new ipod touch and ipod nano.
ipod nano now has FM radio, wifi, microphone, a speaker, pedometer, and a camera, while ipod touch gets more horsepower most likely for gaming purpose but surprisingly no camera.
Steve Jobs explained that the reason Apple decided to not include a camera for ipod touch is made mainly for gaming, and they feel camera is not a very important factor in gaming and it wasn't possible to bring to the current price if they include it.
Interesting part is that according to report, 8 Gb ipod touch will cost as little as $199. I believe it will strengthen Apple position even more as a gaming device in the market.

Batman Arkham Assylum: Breaking the Myth

When Batman AA was announced, little did I paid attention since it would be just another super hero game. In the past, it seems that developer gave no effort to create a remarkable title when it comes to super hero game (especially movie tie ins), where big part of the budget probably went to licensing.

However, when I start playing the demo and the game, I was drawn into it. The story line made simple, Joker takes control of Arkham Assylum where all the super insane criminal being held, and Batman is there to save the day. But after you progress into the game, you will find a good pacing of the story and some twist and turn near the end , just like movie.

The game really captured what is it about being a Batman. Batman is a super hero with no real super power. He is a combat expert, detective genius, master of gadgets who strikes from shadow.
The combat system is stylish, yet not too complicated. He can switch to detective mode to solve puzzles and hidden tracks, and has an array of gadgets to help him in his journey.
While you can confront directly unarmed enemy, Batman will easily die when shot by guns, and often you need to do a stealth take down.

Using "Unreal" engine, Eidos can perfectly capture facial expression and the persona of all the characters. I do feel that this game is all about Batman and the Joker. While during the game, there is not much encounter with the Joker, but the way he keeps trash talking to Batman using speaker phone, made us attached to the Joker without even showing himself.

Hats off to Eidos who made this game brilliant, and I hope it sets the bar for upcoming super hero games which have a myth of being lame.

Hi res image enlarging coming to PS3 and PSP

Imported PS3 Slim is available in Mangga Dua Jakarta now!

Yesterday I went to Mangga dua to fix my broken Xbox 360 (again..). I noticed every store has PS3 slim stocks. So I go around and ask for the price. The price is range from Rp 3.700.000,- to Rp 3.900.000,- but I do think you can still negotiate a bit.
I ask the store to unwrap the box so I can take a look. Personally I prefer old PS3 material, but the size is perfect. Should you want to get one, I suggest you get one right now, cause next week import shipment will stop due to Lebaran coming soon.

Xbox 360, Project Natal: Can Microsoft breakthrough the casual market?

Microsoft announced Project Natal during E3 show. Project Natal enable user to manipulate game without the use of controller. It uses camera that can detect body movement, facial recognition, which in turn use it to control the games.  With Natal, Microsoft hope to gain some casual gamer market from Nintendo Wii.

Casual gamer market simply cannot be underestimate. Since Wii launched, Nintendo has always been no 1 spot in terms of console sale.

Part of Nintendo plan was to create a controller that does not intimidate first time gamer.

Nintendo did it by creating a controller that is simple to use by moving it and it doesn't have a lot of buttons. And it resembles a remote tv, a device that is common to every household.

Now, with project Natal, Microsoft intends to follow Nintendo's step. By creating a simple controller, (what could be simpler than no controller?), it reduces one of entry barrier for casual market.
Now the real question is, can Natal deliver? Is it going to become a revolutionary or just a gimmick?

There is a lot of issue. Microsoft will need to create great software to show what Natal can do before other developers will follow.
Not only that, how is Microsoft going to integrate Xbox and Natal. For example: 2 people playing Modern Warfare 2. One is using controller, the other is using Natal. How do you balance the game? And the one using Natal, can they last couple hours of constant body movement?
And the price. Natal is using high end camera, that is estimated will cost $600 dollar each. Even if Microsoft dare to take a loss and sell it at $200 a camera. Casual gamers will find it too expensive to shell out a total of $500 just to experience casual gaming. Especially since there are lots of competition, ie: Nintendo Wii, Facebook games (which did pretty alright for casual gamer).

Will Microsoft succeed? Only time will tell.

Why "install other OS" removed from PS3 Slim

Ever wonder why, Sony decided to dump the "install other OS" feature in PS3 Slim?
After all this time, users can install other OS such as Linux into PS3, but not anymore with the release of PS3 slim.
Here is the official statement from Sony:

"The PS3 Slim is a major cost reduction involving many changes to hardware components in the PS3 design. In order to offer the OtherOS install, SCE would need to continue to maintain the OtherOS hypervisor drivers for any significant hardware changes – this costs SCE."

Hmm.. maybe, maybe not. Nonetheless, your question has been answered.
